I have the honour to acknowledge the re-
ceipt of your Despatch No. 87 of the 12th. ultimo and with
regard to the second paragraph thereof to inform you that in
my opinion the duties of the Assessor are not so important or
responsible as those of the Registrar of the Supreme Court,
or the Postmaster-General.
2.
If no promotion in another Colony is
available for Mr. Chapman in the near future perhaps you
would take into your favourable consideration the question of
conferring upon Mr. Chapman a reasonable personal allowance
payable in silver and without Exchange Compensation.
3.
I have caused Mr. Chapman to be informed
in accordance with the fifth paragraph of your Despatch under
acknowledgment.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
